9 Weird American Snacks UK Shoppers Won't Believe Are Real

Why America Makes Snacks This Strange (And Why We Love It)

We import a lot of American snacks here at PIC N SNACK, and after a while you stop being surprised by anything. A crisp that's basically a weapon? Fine. A soda that tastes like a birthday cake? Sure. But every so often a box turns up that makes the whole team go "wait, that's a real product?" This is a list of those snacks.

If you'd rather skip the research and just let us surprise you, our Mystery USA Boxes are stuffed with random American weirdness for exactly this reason. Otherwise, read on, because some of what's below genuinely has to be seen to be believed.

9 American Snacks That Sound Made Up (But Aren't)

1. Van Holtens Pickle In A Pouch — A Whole Pickle, Swimming In Sour Brine

Let's start with the weirdest one on the list. This is a full-sized dill pickle, sealed in a pouch of extreme sour Warheads brine, sold as a snack. Not a side dish. Not a garnish. A snack, eaten cold, straight from the pouch, brine and all. It's a genuine cult favourite in American convenience stores and it tastes exactly as sour and salty as it sounds.

2. Zed Fireball Jawbreaker — The Candy That Dares You

Pack of six Zed Fireball cinnamon jawbreakers, a long-lasting American hard candy with a hot cinnamon burn

A jawbreaker is already a strange idea to most Brits (a sweet you suck on for twenty minutes rather than eat?), but Zed went one further with a cinnamon fireball version that genuinely burns. Layer by layer, the heat builds until you're left with a tiny hard centre and a mouth that definitely knows about it.

3. Pop Tarts Frosted Chocolate Chip — Breakfast As A Snack

Box of Pop Tarts Frosted Chocolate Chip toaster pastries, an American breakfast snack eaten cold or toasted

Not weird because of the flavour (chocolate chip is fairly tame, as these things go), but weird because of the concept. Americans eat these cold, straight from the packet, as a snack, a dessert, or breakfast, no toaster required, despite the name practically ordering you to toast them. They're frosted, filled, and genuinely more like cake than anything resembling cereal.

4. Charleston Chew — The Candy Bar You're Meant To Smash With A Hammer

Charleston Chew vanilla flavour chewy nougat rope, an American candy traditionally frozen and smashed before eating

This one comes with instructions nobody asked for. Americans have a tradition of freezing Charleston Chew bars solid and then smashing them into pieces with a hammer before eating, because at room temperature the nougat is so stretchy it's basically taffy. Freeze it, and it shatters like glass instead. We're not saying you need a hammer. We're just saying some people genuinely use one.

5. Creme Savers — Hard Candy That Tastes Like A Milkshake

Hard candy is usually just fruit flavour and sugar. Creme Savers decided that wasn't complicated enough, and swirled an actual creamy, milkshake-style layer right through the middle of a boiled sweet. It shouldn't work. It really does.

6. Jelly Belly American Classics — Gourmet Beans With A Wild Side

Bag of Jelly Belly American Classics gourmet jelly beans in assorted true-to-life flavours

Jelly Belly's "classics" mix is the respectable side of a brand that also makes rotten egg, canned dirt, and barf flavoured beans for its infamous BeanBoozled range. Even the tame flavours here are made with proper, gourmet-level accuracy, which is exactly why the weird ones are so convincing (and so horrifying). Start here before you dare go further.

7. Hot Tamales Fierce Cinnamon — Spicy Candy That Bites Back

Box of Hot Tamales Fierce Cinnamon chewy candy, a spicy American sweet with a genuine cinnamon heat kick

Spicy sweets are rare in the UK, but America has had a cinnamon-heat chewy candy on shelves for decades, and it's not shy about it. These little red chews start sweet and finish with a proper cinnamon burn that builds the more you eat. We've got a small batch of these in stock right now, so don't sleep on it.

8. Twizzlers — Technically Liquorice, Somehow

Pack of Twizzlers strawberry twisted chews, an American candy officially classed as liquorice in the US

No liquorice root. No aniseed. No actual liquorice flavour whatsoever. And yet in America, Twizzlers are legally and officially sold as a type of liquorice candy. They're really just strawberry-flavoured chewy twists, but the classification sticks, and it confuses literally everyone outside the US.

9. Airheads Sour — Proof Sour Candy Doesn't Need To Make Sense

Pack of six sour Airheads chewy candy bars, an American sweet with an intensely sour coating and soft chew

Regular Airheads are already stretchy, chewy and ridiculously long-lasting for something so small. The sour version coats all of that in a sharp, face-scrunching sour layer first. We've actually got stock of these right now too, so if number 7 didn't convince you to order, this might.

Why Does America Make Snacks Like This?

A lot of it comes down to different food regulations and a candy industry that's been experimenting for over a century. US manufacturers can use ingredients, dyes and flavour combinations that either aren't approved in the UK or just never caught on here, which is exactly why a lot of this stuff tastes nothing like anything in a British sweet shop. It's also just a bigger, louder market: more snack brands, competing harder, which tends to produce more novelty for novelty's sake. Basically: the weirdness is a feature, not a bug.
